Healthcare in Michigan's Cities

Michigan, the Wolverine State, is the eighth largest state in population in the US. The state is one-half rural, and the remainder of the state is divided among manufacturing centers and fine educational centers. Of the 10 million people who reside in the state, nearly 8 percent (or about 800,000) are uninsured. A large portion of the uninsured are from the cities hit hard by unemployment as manufacturing jobs have left the state. Others are members of the rural poor, who live far from quality health services, especially in the northern portion of the state.

Because of the recent trends in economic diversification, and because of a recovering job situation, many people are new residents who moved to the state for jobs. This influx adds to the large pool of employees who need medical benefits for their families. Also, the fine higher education systems in Michigan bring an influx of young people, who have their own healthcare concerns.

Ensuring that Michiganians have quality healthcare and adequate insurance is a challenge that the state takes seriously. Several recent state initiatives were designed to make sure that the more vulnerable portions of its population have access to insurance. Children, pregnant women, women who need breast or cervical cancer tests or treatment, and those who are uninsurable because of chronic illness are all cared for through state programs such as the MIChild program or through Medicare.

Several fine medical facilities and teaching hospitals are located in Michigan, especially in the Detroit area. The majority of the state's population resides in a south-central band between Grand Rapids and Detroit, along IH 96. Many of the medical facilities are also located in these areas. The other cities and regions of the state have excellent resources as well. Cities to the north of this band are connected to these facilities by IH 75, which runs north-south.
